Saipan, CNMI – Commonwealth Recorder’s Office Proposes Uniform Marriage Documentation
On November 26 and 27, 2024, Commonwealth Recorder Kelsey G. Aldan, together with justices and judges, met with the Saipan Mayor Ramon B. Camacho, Rota Mayor Aubrey M. Hocog, Tinian and Aguiguan Mayor Edwin P. Aldan, and the Northern Islands Mayor Valentino N. Taisacan to propose a standardized form for marriage application, licensing, and recordation. Special Assistant to the Lieutenant Governor Henry S. Hofschneider, representing the Governor and the Lt. Governor, also attended the meeting.
“Currently, each license-issuing authority in the CNMI uses its own unique forms,” said Commonwealth Recorder Aldan. “Standardizing forms and process will improve recordkeeping and enhance clarity for government agencies and the public.” Aldan proposed a single, uniform marriage application and license, and discussed in the meeting that the law requires person performing marriage to record a copy of the marriage certificate with the Recorder’s Office.
Aldan’s proposal is undergoing review and the consensus is to implement changes by January of 2025.
